When Kurt Busch took the checkered flag Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway to win the Kobalt Tools 500, it became the second time in as many seasons that the Busch brothers have won back-to-back Sprint Cup Series races. Kyle Busch, of course, won last week's race at Las Vegas.
It's become an interesting race to watch as the two siblings accelerate through their respective careers at different speeds.
Kurt Busch debuted in 2000, won the 2004 championship and has plateaued some since joining Penske Racing in 2006. He has, however, won a race each year since 2002.
Younger brother Kyle Busch debuted in 2004 and has been going upward since, especially after moving to Joe Gibbs Racing last season and winning eight races.
Together, the Busch brothers have 32 Cup victories: Kurt with 19, Kyle with 13. It ranks them sixth on a list of brothers who have both won Cup races.
Bobby (84) and Donnie (10) Allison top the chart with 94 victories, so the Busches have a ways to go. Interesting, however, is that the majority of brother combinations are noticeably one-sided.
While the Allisons and Waltrips combined for many more victories, it was Bobby Allison (84) and Darrell Waltrip (84) carrying the load among siblings. Same for the Thomas brothers: Herb had 48 wins to Donald's single victory.
The exceptions: Flocks, Labontes and Busches.
| Wins | Family | Brothers (wins) |
|---|---|---|
| 94 | Allison | Bobby (84), Donnie (10) |
| 88 | Waltrip | Darrell (84), Michael (4) |
| 62 | Flock | Tim (39), Fonty (19) Bob (4) |
| 49 | Thomas | Herb (48), Donald (1) |
| 43 | Labonte | Terry (22), Bobby (21) |
| 32 | Busch | Kurt (19), Kyle (13) |
| 25 | Burton | Jeff (20), Ward (5) |
| 22 | Parsons | Benny (21), Phil (1) |
| 19 | Bodine | Geoffrey (18), Brett (1) |
So among siblings who have both won races in the Cup Series, who's the best?
Three Flock brothers won races (Tim, Fonty and Bob), which is an impressive feat in itself. The Labontes are within a victory of each other, and have combined to win three Cup championships.
But the Busches? Kurt is 30 and Kyle is 23, meaning both have plenty of racing left.
